Centre West Coast Region
Isolated from
the rest of New Zealand by a sky-piercing spine of mountains, the West Coast is a lost world quite unlike anywhere else in the country.
| Here the
land rises from sea level to snow-capped peaks nearly three and a half kilmetres high
across a narrow strip of coast some five hundred kilmetres long. Fast flowing rivers tumble through dense, mist shrouded orests on their
short but spectacular rush to the sea. |
|
 |
| Two of
the most impressive rivers, though, are literally frozen in time. For the visitor, the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers provide a rare, up close
look at two of Nature's mightiest landscape artists at work. |
|
|
The rough-hewn
coastal character is a stoic and self-reliant soul, but always ready to welcome the
visitor, often with a tall story culled from the passionate history of his birthplace.
New Zealand Travel Centre staff are only too pleased to advise and
arrange all your travel details. Gourmets note, the West Coast Wild Food Festival is held
on Hokitika every year. It is a feast of the Coast's finest tucker, harvested from the
fields, rivers, and wild waters of the Tasman Sea. |
