From the lake flows the renowned Clutha River, not quite the longest in new Zealand, but cetainly the biggest in volume of water. Trout fishing is a big attraction and Wanaka's trout hatcheries are open to curious visitors during the second half of each year. 

Summer days are long and the warm temperatures attract many campers and boating enthusiasts. During winter, plenty of snow brings skiers from around the world
