Southland Region

Here the vast Southern Ocean thunders against rocky shores where large numbers of dolphins, seals and penguins seek shelter to feed and to breed

Invercargill is the region's capital and an ideal base for visiting the unique natural beauty Southland has in abundance.

Offshore lies Stewart Island. With few roads and only one small town, this natural island sanctuary is as near to Eden as you will find. Well maintained

  Sheltering in the harbour

walking tracks weave through dense bush alive with bird song.  Spectacular walks are alive with nature's gifts Even the rare Kiwi is commonly sighted in its natural habitat.
The rare New Zealand Kiwi East from Invercargill is the Catlins, a  vast

tract of native forest reaching down to a deserted coastline of sweeping sandy beaches. It is home to rare marine mammals, a petrified forest, the spectacular Cathedral Caves, and many scenic waterfalls which tumble through this tranquil corner of the world. Travelling west, the Southern Scenic Route passes historic Riverton before entering the magnificent Fiordland National Park.  The Southland is home to many Arctic animals Take time to see Southland, its friendly people and natural beauty are bound to be a highlight of your New Zealand holiday.
