The Rotorua Region

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland   There can be few places in the world where Mother Nature is quite so busy. Vividly coloured lakes seethe and bubble. Geysers roar and rumble. Steam even issues from fields and drains around the city. All in a lovely natural string of lakes, forests and sleeping volcanoes.
The most interesting displays of Maori culture are found here, too. Combining all these activities under one friendly umbrella is the Natural Experiences Company. In their own words "We pride ourselves on our highest possible service standards and our excellent value for money".

The valley is dotted with many interesting thermal and volcanic features. The walk first encounters The Cauldron, a pale blue lake simmering gently at around 50oC. The shortest walk lasts 40 minutes, the longest, two hours. Pass through the valley and board a boat for a tour of the crater lake. This was the site of the world famous Pink and White Terraces.

The name means "sacred waters" and contains New Zealand's most colourful crystalline formations, especially the Primrose Terrace, 12 hectares of exquisite mineral terracing.

The famous Champagne Pool exhibits all the fizz and colour of a glass of Moet, but is served up hot. Erupting Geysers, boiling mud, and active volcanic craters ensure an unforgettable experience at Wai-o-tapu.

Climb in comfort to the breathtaking crater of Mt Tarawera. The last eruption in 1886 opened a gash in the earth seven kilometres long and more than 12 kilometres wide. There are exceptional views from the top and your guides will provide refreshments.

You can combine your crater visit with helicopter flights and other geothermal wonders.

Smothered by ash and mud in the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera, the village is a time capsule of life preserved at the moment of its destruction. There is a museum of pre-European artifacts and several walking trails to places of interest. Native songbirds call in the trees and giant trout can be hand fed in Te Wairoa stream.
